PUBLISHED: 29 October 2012

She's normally seen in stylish outfits, but Nancy Shevell opted for some comfortable gear as she and Sir Paul McCartney took in a stroll in New York.
The husband and wife walked arm in arm as they pounded the city's pavements, with the Beatles legend seemingly hanging onto his wife's every word.
And the clever couple also made sure they were wearing the right gear for their long walk.

The 70-year-old singer and his 51-year-old wife both wore comfortable trainers for their stroll - with Nancy wearing black trousers and a tight pink sports top.
McCartney wrapped up warm in jeans, a hooded top and a jacket as they took in the long walk.
Meanwhile, the Hey Jude star insists Yoko Ono didn't break up The Beatles.

John Lennon's marriage to Yoko has long been attributed by many fans as the reason the iconic band split in 1970.
However, McCartney insists that is not the case.
In an interview with Sir David Frost, he said: 'I don't think you can blame her for anything. John was definitely going to leave.''

He continued: 'She showed him another way to be, which was very attractive to him. So it was time for John to leave.''

Paul McCartney: “Yoko Ono no fue quien separó a ‘The Beatles’”

BEATLES'SECRET WEAPON : GEORGE HARRISON'S '63 RICKENBAKER 360/12

BEATLES'SECRET WEAPON : GEORGE HARRISON'S '63 RICKENBAKER 360/12
By Damian Fanelli
August 8th, 2012

Although the last thing the red-hot Beatles needed in early 1964 was a “secret weapon,” that’s exactly what they got when George Harrison received his first Rickenbacker 12-string, in a beautiful Fireglo finish, in February of that year, during the Beatles’ first U.S. tour.
The guitar was given to him by Francis C. Hall, owner and president of the California-based Rickenbacker company, which is now celebrating its 80th anniversary.
Hall spoke to Brian Epstein before the Beatles arrived in the U.S. and arranged a meeting with the group. On February 8 at the Savoy Hilton in New York City, he showed the band several different models. Lennon tried out the 360/12 but thought it would be better for Harrison, who was sick in bed at the Plaza Hotel. When Harrison finally got to see it, he loved it immediately.
“Straight away I liked that you knew exactly which string was which,” Harrison said, referring to how the guitar’s 12 tuners are grouped in top- and side-mounted pairs on the headstock. “[On some] 12-strings, you spend hours trying to tune it.”
Harrison’s first 360/12 was the second Rickenbacker 12-string ever made; its serial number — CM107 — dates it to December 1963. The main difference between it and the prototype is how they are strung. The first model had a conventional 12-string setup, in which the octave string is the first to be struck in each string pair. On Harrison’s model and subsequent Rickenbacker 12-strings, the octave strings occur second in the string pairs and the lower-pitched string is struck first.
Harrison’s guitar has a trapeze tailpiece, triangle inlays, double white pickguards, black control knobs and mono and stereo (Rick-O-Sound) outputs mounted on a chrome plate on the side of the guitar.
The guitar, with its unique, chiming sound, can be heard on the bulk of the A Hard Day’s Nightalbum, “I Call Your Name,” “What You’re Doing” — and several other songs, up to and including “Ticket to Ride.” His second 360/12, a 1965 model with rounded cutaways, is heard on “If I Needed Someone.”

Record signed by The Beatles to be auctioned in Worthing

Record signed by The Beatles to be auctioned in Worthing
Published on Friday 26 October 2012

A rare set of Beatles autographs, signed on a record, is sure to please the owner when it goes under the hammer in Worthing for a starting estimate of £15,000.
The autographs were signed on one of the first Gold Label pressings of The Beatles’ debut album, Please, Please Me, during a card game with Freddie and the Dreamers during summer, 1963. The record was used as a coaster during the game.
The band were staying, along with the Freddie and the Dreamers, at the Normandie House Hotel in Paddington, London, and the record was given to Arthur Collins, the owner of the hotel, who was also playing cards with them.
The record is being sold by his son and daughter, Chris Collins and Liz Chambers, who live in Worthing, at Campbells auction house, High Street, on December 11.
Liz said: “Late one evening while my father was drinking and playing cards with Freddie and the Dreamers, The Beatles returned to the hotel in the early hours after attending some promotional events. In their possession was the record – one of the first Gold Label pressings of Please, Please Me, which had been given to them.
“All of The Beatles joined the card game and the record was placed in the middle of the table where it was used as a coaster for whisky glasses. As the card game reached a drunken conclusion in the early hours, all of The Beatles signed their signatures and added short messages, as did Freddie of Freddie and the Dreamers, not wanting to be left out, as a thank-you for the hospitality they had been shown at the hotel.”
The Normandie House Hotel had an agreement with music industry executives to safely accommodate pop stars in a “low profile” manner. Consequently, The Beatles, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Freddie and the Dreamers and bands of the time were guests at the hotel.
On the album, which came out in March, 1963, John Lennon signed the words Blast for Hide, while George Harrison wrote in brackets G.P.O.
Auctioneer Paul Campbell, said: “We are delighted to have been asked to sell these autographs dating from almost 50 years ago. Not only do they have a great provenance and a wonderful story to accompany them, they are signed on a mono pressing of Please, Please Me, which has the rare gold label – so has a value in its own right.” Paul said the record could sell for £30,000.

Yoko Ono donates to students at Liverpool university
Yoko Ono has donated £100,000 to help vulnerable students at Liverpool John Moore's University (LJMU).
26 October 2012

John Lennon's widow has given the money to provide support for youngsters who have been in local authority care, or are estranged from their parents.
The money will be used to continue the John Lennon Imagine Awards, set up in 2009 following a gift from Ms Ono.
The scheme offers bursaries of £1,000 to students who qualify at the university where Lennon once studied.
The Liverpool-born Beatle joined the School of Art and Design in 1957.
Ms Ono said: "Over the last three years we have witnessed the significant impact that the awards have had on the students' self-confidence, achievements and future prospects.
"Our first set of students has now successfully graduated and they are in turn now helping to mentor those just starting out at the university.
"I know that these awards, set up in John's name, have made a real difference to the lives of these young people and I am delighted and proud that John's legacy lives on in such a force for good."
The university said more than 200 students had benefited from the scheme so far.
LJMU Vice-Chancellor Professor Nigel Weatherill said: "The importance of studying at university on improving life chances cannot be underestimated and LJMU has always demonstrated a true commitment to helping students reach their full potential, regardless of background and circumstance.
"We are extremely grateful for Yoko's continued support of this unique and vitally important initiative, the success of which has surpassed all of our expectations."

Teacher rang back mystery number - and found Sir Paul McCartney on the line
When Shropshire teacher Charlotte Slim returned a missed call from a number she didn’t recognise the last thing she expected was to find herself speaking to a Beatles legend.
October 27, 2012

Miss Slim was amazed to find herself having a chat over the phone with Sir Paul McCartney just moments later. But she was so star-struck at the sudden turn of events that she could barely get any words out.
Miss Slim, a Year 9 teacher at Thomas Adams School in Wem, had been contacted by Sir Paul’s management company after her pupils, including Bartek Czaplinsk, wrote to the star asking for donations for a charity raffle.
Her class wrote to a host of celebrities and football clubs hoping to collect prizes for the raffle in aid of children’s charity ChildLine.
Miss Slim said: “I called this number back that I didn’t recognise and it was his management firm.
“They said he wanted to help and I said ‘that’s brilliant’. Then they said he’d just walked into the room and would I like to speak to him. You don’t say no. I don’t think I actually said anything properly. I said ‘hello’, ‘thanks’ and ‘’bye’. I was a bit star-struck.”
Sir Paul sent an autographed CD of RAM, an album first recorded with wife Linda in 1971 and re-released earlier this year. Across the cover he has written ‘Cheers x Sir Paul McCartney’.
Other celebrities who sent prizes include Sir Michael Caine, the Hairy Bikers, Greg Davies and Jessie J, as well as the casts of Coronation Street and Emmerdale. Liverpool FC sent a pair of boots worn by defender Sebastian Coates.
The raffle has been organised as part of a life skills course the 13 and 14-year-olds are doing, which includes a task to raise money for a good cause.
“The children are really excited. Every day they were asking if the post had arrived. It’s good to see people take them seriously,” said Miss Slim. The draw for the raffle will be made on November 9. Sealed bids are being invited for Sir Paul’s gift and two signed photos from Sir Michael Caine.

Everything measures up on Lennon Bermuda CD
By By Scott Neil
Published Oct 25, 2012

A remarkable CD of cover versions of songs written by John Lennon as a solo artist, and in partnership with fellow Beatle Paul McCartney, was released during the explosion of activity surrounding the Lennon Bermuda tribute concert last month.
The 32-track collection is now widely available across the Island, and an international version of the of the CD, featuring additional contributions from Bryan Ferry and Roy Young, is currently being prepared for global release.
Music lovers will find much to like in the ‘Lennon Bermuda’ double CD, which captures the raw energy and passion of Mr Lennon’s canon of work.
Featuring predominantly Bermudian artists, and Bermuda-linked performers, the ‘Lennon Bermuda’ CD maintains impressively consistent quality throughout.
Standout tracks include Christina Frith singing ‘Julia’. The song was written by Mr Lennon about his mother who was killed in a road accident when he was a teenager. Of all the vocal performances on the CD, Ms Frith’s perhaps resonates the most with delightful multi-tracked harmonies and the way in which, with seeming effortlessness, she varies her vocal pitch mid-song.
There has always been a haunting beauty to the song, but it is even more striking, and heart-wrenching, in the hands of Ms Frith.
‘Lennon Bermuda’ encompasses the full spectrum and many faceted lyrical journey of Mr Lennon’s career, including some of the songs he wrote and worked on during his two-month summer vacation in Bermuda in 1980.
For something forceful and uncompromising, look no further than Horrendous Menez (aka Paul Muggleton) on ‘Gimmie Some Truth’. Mr Muggleton’s vocals capture Mr Lennon’s controlled anger and together with some overdrive guitar give the song an almost punk rock edge.
Ironically, when the anti-establishment, punk and New Wave scene was in full swing, Mr Lennon was midway through his self-imposed five-year hiatus from the music business. His absence was noted, with one of the UK’s biggest selling music papers The New Musical Express asking on its front page in 1978 ‘Where the hell are you John Lennon?’
The Horrendous Mendez track, together with a paired down version of ‘Working Class Hero’ by Bermuda’s Paper Cutouts, are reminders that Mr Lennon was realising songs in the early 1970s that could easily have held their own in the punk era at the end of that decade.
International stars Maxi Priest, Biggie Irie and Judie Tzuke all come up to scratch with their contributions to the CD.
There is a jaunty, reggae-pop feel to Mr Priest’s version of ‘All My Loving’, skilfully brought up to date by the combination of Mr Priest and the multi-talented musicianship of Livingston Brown and the signature saxophone flourishes of Fitzroy Minnott.
Mr Irie maintains the Caribbean flavour with a reggae-influenced ‘Woman’ one of Mr Lennon’s greatest love songs, which he composed while in Bermuda. During one of his final interviews, Mr Lennon spoke of his appreciation of reggae and the Caribbean musical influences he came across in his adopted hometown New York City. It would have been fascinating to know Mr Lennon’s reaction to Mr Irie’s soaring, and respectful interpretation of ‘Woman’.
Judie Tzuke, another famed songbird from the pop charts, delivers a charming version of an earlier love song by Mr Lennon, the plaintive ‘Love’. Adorned with piano accompaniment from producer Paul Mugglestobn and Tim Deal, the song soars thanks to Ms Tzuke’s graceful touch.
However, the CD is missing something ... dud tracks. Look as hard as you like, play it as many times as you like, you’ll be pushed to find anything that doesn’t measure up.
The pulsating, beating heart of the album is the locally recorded ‘All You Need is Love’. With a chorus of Island-based singers it has a number of featured singers that include Tourism Minister Wayne Furbert, Gita Blakeney, Ed Christopher, Francesca Dill and Will Black. The collective is called ‘The Love Singers’ and there is a tangible feeling of love and fun emanating from this track, which was skilfully produced by Felix Tod.
Top marks are equally due to Christina Frith’s brother Jonathan Frith, who tackled Mr Lennon’s ballad to son Sean, ‘Beautiful Boy’, and preserves the gentle mood of the original. The song was one those Mr Lennon wrote in Bermuda.
Spellbounding on ‘Norwegian Wood’ is a third member of Frith family, songbird Heather Nova. She honours the magic and mystery of the Beatles’ original, with an ethereal quality to her voice and some faultless, understated acoustic guitar work.
The CD’s opening track is ‘Walking on Thin Ice’ from Mr Lennon’s widow Yoko Ono. The song was the track the couple were working on the fateful December 1980 night Mr Lennon was shot and killed outside their Manhattan apartment. Reworked and remixed by Tim Deal, the track defies its 32 years and seems as up-to-the-minute as anything to be found in present day clubland. There is a hint of the DNA pumping beat that served the remixed version of Suzanne Vega’s ‘Tom’s Diner’ so well in the 90s.
One of the collection’s most pleasant surprises is ‘Real Love’ by Bermuda’s Broadway star Rebecca Faulkenberry. This duet features Nic Christopher and compares favourable with the Beatles own version. The song was another of those Mr Lennon was working on while in Bermuda and, as a recording, did not get beyond being a rudimentary demo recording.
In 1995, with the blessing of Ms Ono, the surviving Beatles got together to finish the song, playing along to Mr Lennon’s home-recorded piano and singing. As good as the Beatles’ collaborative effort was (it reached the Top 5 in the UK pop charts), Ms Faulkenberry and Mr Christopher have benefited from starting from scratch and shaping the lyrics and music more wholesomingly than was possible for Messers Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr in 1995.
Again, producer Mr Tod is to be commended for his influence on this track.
Uzimon’s ska/reggae delivery lifts ‘New York City’ and places it up among the best on the CD. He delivers the lyrics with great clarity and highlights the songs sense of fun and verve.
What to say about ‘I’m Losing You’ by K Gabrielle? It perfectly presents a moment of anguish from Mr Lennon’s heavily Bermuda-influenced ‘Double Fantasy’ album. Ms Gabrielle has a powerful singing style, but more than this, her interpretation of the song is spot on she feels the song’s genesis and she passes that on in no uncertain terms.
Joy T Barnum is one of Bermuda’s greatest present day voices. Take one listen to her version of ‘Mind Games’ and you will know why. Blessed with a great vocal range, Ms Barnum masterfully picks out the nuances of this classic track.
The harmonious Bailey and Tullula Tzuke wrap ‘Oh My Love’ in a heavenly aura, while McCartney K is equally enthralling on ‘Grow Old With Me’, a track that would surely have been among Mr Lennon’s greatest had he lived long enough to complete a final version.
Bruce Springsteen’s guitarist Nils Lofgren and Bermudian drummer Andy Newmark — who played on Mr Lennon’s final albums, combine to create one of the CD’s signature tracks ‘Any Time At All’. The 1960s pop varnish of the original is given a harder edge, with almost an industrial feel in places. In the hands of time-honoured veterans of Mr Lofgren and Mr Newmark’s class it works, and brings the Beatles’ classic right up to date.
The drumming of Mr Newmark can be found on many of the CD’s other tracks, including Paul Carrack’s lilting ‘Girl’.
Errol Reid gives just the right amount of bright swing to ‘Borrowed Time’, with Maxi Priest listed among the percussionists providing backing.
Rachel Brown is another standout artist, contributing a delightful version of ‘Watching the Wheels’.
Other highlights are Victor Chambray’s rendition of ‘Across the Universe’, Michael Cacy’s ‘Crippled Inside’, Chewstick’s ‘Power to the People’, and Bailey Outerbridge’s ‘Revolution’.
Listen out also for Rocky & The Natives ‘Tight As’, Soda’s ‘God’, Two Guitars ‘Happy Christmas (War is Over)’, Phil Morrison’s ‘Lucy in the Sky’, Robert ‘Sai’ Emery’s ‘Imagine’, Mia Chambray’s powerful version of ‘Don’t Let Me Down’ and Steve Easton’s ‘Bless You’.
The ‘Lennon Bermuda’ CD costs $20 and can be bought from a variety of retailers across the Island, including Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art, Music Box, Gorhams and Freisenbruch-Myer.

School textbook owned by John Lennon to fetch thousands at auction

by Lauren Riley
Published Tue 23 Oct 2012

A Liverpool school geography textbook owned by John Lennon is tipped to fetch over £2,000 at auction.
The school textbook "The British Isles" by Thomas Pickles is signed by the Beatle as J W Lennon of class 4C in 1956 when the hitmaker would have been 16.
The book is tipped to fetch more than #2,000 at an auction in Liverpool with bids expected from as far as Japan and America.
A fellow pupil of Lennon's at Quarry Bank High School in Allerton, Liverpool, discovered the book at the back of a wardrobe and had it valued by Cato Crane Auctioneers.
John Crane, of Cato Crane, said: "It's a phenomenal item to put up for auction and we're very proud to have it here.
"The gentleman who brought the book to our attention had lost it for years and discovered it stuffed down the back of a wardrobe.
"Genuine Beatles memorabilia always fetches high prices at auction and we are intending to sell this piece of Beatles history at a special auction next August.
"Items such as this with a great story are worth lots of money.
"We had the book checked out by three experts who approved its authenticity.
"The book could fetch well over £2,000 if several people bid for it.

"These kind of collector's items are like gold dust now so it's great to have one like this at Cato Crane.
"The gentleman selling the book was about four years below John Lennon at school and luckily kept the book for all these years."

Born in Liverpool in 1934 to Jewish descent, the cool, modern, gay and urbane Brian spent his early adult life working for the family business NEMS (North End Music Stores), he was drafted into the Royal Army Service Corps and moved to London to join RADA. He returned to Liverpool to manage the brand new NEMS city centre music store and not long after was the historic lunchtime visit to the famous Cavern Club to hear four Liverpool lads perform and the rest is history. Brian died in 1967 of an accidental overdose at the age of 32.

Brian Epstein was best known as a music entrepreneur and legendary manager of The Beatles and was the person responsible for their rise to mega-stardom all over the world. He also managed other popular artists such as Gerry & The Pacemakers, Billy J Kramer, The Foremost, The Dakotas and Cilla Black.

Brian Epstein recalled meeting The Beatles: "I hadn't had anything to do with management of pop artists before that day that I went down to the Cavern Club and heard the Beatles playing... I was immediately struck by their music, their beat, and their sense of humour on stage - and even afterwards when I met them I was struck again by their personal charm. And it was there, that really, it all started".

EPSTEIN the Play

Brian Epstein’s short life was crammed with success and controversy; he was an intelligent man whose prescience, taste, vision and passion left a lifelong impact on the world.  Born in Liverpool in 1934 to Jewish descent, he spent his early adult years working for the family business NEMS (North End Music Stores) before being drafted into the Royal Army Service Corps, after a brief stint in London joining RADA and living a more openly gay life he returned to Liverpool to manage the new NEMS city centre music store making it one of the biggest in the North. Not long after was the historic lunchtime visit to the famous Cavern Club to hear four Liverpool lads perform and the rest was history.  Brian had a passion for classical music and theatre and even leased the Saville Theatre in London.  Immense rapid success, busy schedules and constant touring took its toll on Brian and depression and recreational drugs set-in.  Brian Epstein died of a sleeping pill overdose in August 1967, he was aged just 32.  His death was immediately felt, while the Beatles continued to make magnificent music, their business affairs rapidly crumbled and by 1970 it was all over.
